Introduction

Stores and Yard Supervisor Kevin Hook has been part of Cappagh Browne’s journey from the very beginning. With 34 years of experience in the industry, Kevin brings knowledge, pride and a sharp eye for detail to a role that helps keep teams moving every day.

Kevin’s career has taken him from tarmac reinstatement to civils reactive pipe repair, frame and cover work, and now into his current role supporting stores and yard operations. After starting in the yard at Weatherlees in Kent, Kevin is now based at Ham Hill, where he has spent around five years helping to keep the operation organised, stocked and ready for the teams who rely on it.

A typical day for Kevin is all about making sure the basics are done well. That means keeping the yard tidy, updating stock, supporting deliveries and making sure gangs have the materials, fittings and equipment they need when they need them. It also means paying attention to the small things that make a difference, from keeping the fridge stocked to turning the heating on so the workplace is warm first thing in the morning.

For Kevin, a tidy yard is not just about presentation. It reflects standards, mindset and the impression Cappagh Browne gives to visitors, colleagues and clients.

“I believe that if a client comes to the yard and it is tidy, it creates a great first impression,” Kevin says. “Tidy yard, tidy mindset.”

That attention to detail has not gone unnoticed. Kevin has recently received CBUL Star of the Month award for his work, something he sees as recognition for the pride he takes in running a tight ship and supporting the teams around him.

Like many operational roles, the job can be demanding. Multiple deliveries, supervisors needing support and gangs looking for fittings can all arrive at once. Kevin’s approach is simple but effective: stay calm, focus on one job at a time and keep things moving.

He describes the team around him as supportive, cooperative and understanding, and says the culture at Cappagh Browne is one where everyone is recognised, including those working behind the scenes.

“What I enjoy most is that no one is forgotten about, even the people behind the scenes, like me in the yard,” Kevin says. “There’s a friendly atmosphere, and of course, the banter.”

Outside of work, Kevin enjoys classic car rallies and regularly showcases his own classic cars. Something people may not know is that he is vegetarian, although he says people often do not believe him when he tells them.

For anyone thinking about joining Cappagh Browne, Kevin’s advice is clear: “Go for it. It is a great company with a great work ethic.”
