Introduction

At Cappagh Browne, the success of every job on site starts long before the first excavation begins. Careful planning, coordination and communication make the difference between a smooth delivery and a challenging one. For Nathan Mitchell, Planning Supervisor, that responsibility sits right at the heart of his role.

Nathan has been with Cappagh Browne for over seven years, starting his journey after moving from retail into the utilities sector. Since then, he has developed extensive experience in civil works, progressing from working in a gang to supervising and planning complex programmes of work.

Today, Nathan’s role focuses on coordinating jobs, managing resources and supporting teams on the ground. Each day begins by reviewing what happened the day before, planning upcoming works and adjusting schedules where needed. He works closely with supervisors and site teams to ensure crews have the information and support they need to deliver safely and efficiently.

“Planning is about making the most of the day,” Nathan explains. “You’re looking at the work in front of you and making sure the gangs are in the right place at the right time so the job gets done.”

Nathan also acts as an important link between operational and customer teams. He plays a key role in safeguarding the customer journey by identifying jobs that could disrupt the local community, and in the development of the resulting community response plans. Clear communication helps ensure expectations are managed and disruption is minimised for the communities where Cappagh Browne operates.

One project that stands out for Nathan is the Eastern Road lining scheme, one of the first major projects he supervised after stepping up from a gang role. Being trusted with a large and complex programme so early in his supervisory career was a defining moment.

“It was a big responsibility,” he says. “But it was also a chance to prove I could step up.”

With years of experience across operations and planning, Nathan’s knowledge helps teams respond quickly to challenges and keep work moving. His ability to balance operational demands, customer communication and team coordination plays a key role in delivering efficient and reliable outcomes across the network.
