Introduction

This summer, Cappagh Browne had the pleasure of welcoming Ben Bellamy, a first-year mathematics student from the University of Exeter, into our Commercial Team. Keen to gain real-world experience, Ben quickly rolled up his sleeves and started making a difference.

Hitting the Ground Running

From day one, Ben was involved in core processes – managing invoices, supporting the Commercial Team, and helping to streamline operations for the Plant and Transport Team. Ha also helped design and implement a new PPE tracking system, combining a live spreadsheet with an order form. This smart solution which will be rolled out over the coming months make it easy to see what stock is available across our depots, helping us save money and reduce waste.

“It’s rewarding to see the changes actually start helping the team,” Ben said. “Before, so much was done manually, moving forward things will be simpler and more efficient.”

Mentorship and Support

Guiding Ben through his placement was Dani Ball, Head of Streetworks & Commercial Support, who praised his fresh approach and eagerness to learn.

“Ben was a real asset to the team,” Dani said. “He quickly spotted opportunities to improve processes, and showed great initiative for someone just starting out.”

She added:

“Ben has developed new systems that we’ll be rolling out in the coming months, which will transform the way we order plant and PPE. By enabling orders to come directly from site level, the process will be smoother, more efficient, and commercially simpler. Mentoring students like Ben is always rewarding — he was enthusiastic, curious, and unafraid to get stuck in. We’re really proud of what he achieved in such a short time.”

A Glimpse Inside Cappagh Browne

For Ben, the placement wasn’t just about learning new technical skills – it was also about experiencing what makes Cappagh Browne unique.

“Everyone has been so supportive. If I had a question, I knew there’d always be someone willing to help,” he said. “It’s a very collaborative place to work, and that really stood out to me.”

He also noted how connected leadership is across the business:

“I was surprised by how well Jeff (CBUL Managing Director) knows everyone – he really makes an effort to connect with people across the business.”

Looking to the Future

As Ben returns to university for his second year, he takes with him valuable insights and new confidence.

“It’s been eye-opening to take my first steps into employment. My advice to anyone thinking about a placement with Cappagh Browne would be apply early – you won’t want to miss out.”

Dani summed it up best:

“Placements like this benefit both sides. Ben gained hands-on experience, and we gained fresh ideas and energy. He’s left a positive mark here, and we wish him every success in whatever path he chooses next.”
