Introduction

Job Summary:

 

The Civils Ganger plays a crucial role in managing and leading a small team of operatives on the Southern Water sewerage projects. The role involves hands-on sewer repairs, ensuring that all work is executed safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards. The Civils Ganger will be responsible for the day-to-day organization of tasks related to sewerage system maintenance, repairs, and installations, ensuring compliance with Southern Water’s standards and regulations, whilst complying with Big Change systems.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Team Leadership:

  • Lead and motivate a team of operatives to perform sewerage-related civil works.
  • Allocate daily tasks to team members based on project requirements and skill levels.
  • Provide on-site guidance and instruction to ensure tasks are carried out correctly and safely.

Work Planning and Execution:

  • Assist the Civils Supervisor in planning and organizing work schedules.
  • Ensure that all work is performed according to the project plan and specifications.
  • Coordinate the installation, repair, and maintenance of sewerage systems, including pipe laying, manhole installation, and trenching.

Health and Safety Compliance:

  • Enforce strict adherence to health and safety regulations on-site, particularly in relation to confined spaces, trenching, and working with heavy machinery.
  • Conduct regular safety briefings and toolbox talks with the team.
  • Ensure that all team members are wearing appropriate PPE and following safety protocols.

Quality Control:

  • Monitor the quality of work performed by the team to ensure it meets the required standards and specifications set by Southern Water.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure it is free from defects and that it aligns with the project’s design and technical requirements.
  • Identify and address any quality issues promptly.

Resource Management:

  • Manage the use of materials, tools, and equipment on-site to minimize waste and ensure efficiency.
  • Report any material shortages or equipment issues to the Civils Supervisor for resolution.
  • Ensure that all tools and equipment are maintained in good working order.

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate records of daily work activities, including progress, issues encountered, and any changes made to the work plan.
  • Communicate daily with the Civils Supervisor to provide updates on work progress and any challenges.
  • Document and report any incidents, near misses, or breaches of safety protocols.

Communication and Coordination:

  • Act as the primary point of contact between the operatives and the Civils Supervisor.
  • Coordinate with other teams and subcontractors working on the project to avoid conflicts and ensure smooth workflow.
  • Liaise with Southern Water representatives on-site to ensure compliance with their requirements.

Problem Solving:

  • Address and resolve any on-site issues that arise during the execution of sewerage works, including unforeseen ground conditions or technical challenges.
  • Provide immediate solutions to operational problems to prevent delays in project timelines.

Training and Development:

  • Mentor less experienced team members, providing on-the-job training and support.
  • Identify training needs within the team and communicate them to the Civils Supervisor for further action.

 

Required Skills and Qualifications:

 

Experience:

  • Extensive experience in civil engineering works, specifically related to sewerage systems and utilities.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or team-leading role on similar projects.

Skills:

  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent knowledge of sewerage systems, pipework, and underground utilities.
  • Competence in reading and interpreting construction plans and technical drawings.
  • Practical problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions under pressure.

Certifications:

  • Relevant safety certifications, such as CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card.
  • Confined Space Entry certification.
  • Manual Handling certification.
  • SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) or SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme) is advantageous.

Physical Requirements:

  • Good physical fitness, capable of performing manual labor.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and in various weather conditions.
